FELS’ George Daniels honored for improvement of health and safety

By Christine Souza

An enduring commitment to farm safety has brought a prestigious award to L. George Daniels III, the executive vice president and former general manager of the Farm Employers Labor Service, a wholly owned subsidiary of the California Farm Bureau Federation.

The University of California and U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Farm Safety Program honored Daniels for his many years of service to the people of California in the improve- ment of workplace safety and health for farmers, farmworkers and their families.

“You are not surprised to find people in the public sector working on farm safety, but to find somebody in the private sector with a record like George’s is unusual and he has made a great contribution to this cause over the years,” said James Meyers, UC farm safety specialist.

Daniels was presented with the award on Feb. 1 at the AgSafe annual conference held in Monterey. AgSafe is a nonprofit coalition of individuals, groups and organizations that share the mission of the prevention of in juries, illnesses and fatalities among those working in agriculture.

“We honored George for his role in organizing and making the Farm Employers Labor Service safety programs an effective force for farm safety in the state and for demonstrating how to effectively conduct private sector farm safety education programs,” Meyers said.

Daniels said he was surprised and honored to receive the recognition from the UC Farm Safety Program, and believes that the subject of safety is critical to running a successful farming operation.

“Safety is probably one of the areas that most employers will recognize as being important, but it is probably one of the last areas that is given much attention because it is seen as a cost,” Daniels said. “FELS was created to help agricultural employers deal with labor issues. Safety is an area where both parties can come together on equal terms and achieve a win-win result. ”

Daniels joined CFBF as a field representative in 1973 and in 1975 became the FELS general manager. For 30 years Daniels managed the development of the FELS program and its network of labor management consultants in California and Oregon. The Labor Management Consultant program specializes in providing agricultural employers with loss control, personnel management and labor rela tions services. Among the chief services provided to employers are supervisory development, safety training and personnel management advice.

Over the years, Daniels has consulted with agricultural employers in the areas of personnel management, safety and labor relations. As a recognized agricultural labor management authority, he has conducted a wide range of programs on agricultural supervision, agricultural labor relations, labor law compliance, CallOSHA regulations, safety, personnel management and employee relations.
