Biography
BIOGRAPHY OF JOHN BARRIENTOS
John is the Field Operations Manager responsible for managing the field consulting services. He works out of the Salinas Valley and has more than 30 years of experience in agricultural labor management. John has worked for a variety of agricultural employers including vineyards, tree fruit growers, floral nurseries, row crop harvesting & farming operations, agricultural trade associations and worker’s compensation insurance companies. His experience includes work in labor management relations, human resources, supervisor training, ALRA/NLRA elections, safety training and safety program development.

Thirty years of experience in the agricultural industry, working in labor
management relations, human resources, safety program development, supervisor
training, ALRA/NLRA elections and employee relations. Excellent bilingual
communication skills.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
1973-1980
BUD ANTLE, INC., Salinas, CA. A major vegetable grower-shipper with over
2,000 employees and nine farming operations in California and Arizona.
Employee Field Services (1973-1975) Responsible for providing guidance
and assistance with issues regarding health insurance benefits, worker's
compensation claims, unemployment benefits, payroll checks, collective
bargaining agreements and employee social services. Safety Manager (1975-1980)
Manage safety program and worker's compensation insurance claims, provide
guidance for compliance with regulatory agency requirements, conduct periodic
safety audits and safety training.
1980-1986
THE GARIN COMPANY, Salinas, CA. A vegetable grower-shipper with about
400 employees and farming operations in California and Arizona. Employee
Relations Manager, responsible for managing the human resources department,
employment and benefit polices, field hiring practices, supervisor training,
safety program development and monitoring compliance with collective bargaining
agreements in the cooler and field haul departments. Primary focus was
directed at employee relations, grievance resolution and maintaining a
non-union environment.
1986-1988
D'ARRIGO BROS. OF CALIFORNIA, Salinas, CA. Labor Relations Manager for
this grower-shipper of fresh fruit and vegetables, with over 1,200 employees
in five farming districts in California and Arizona responsible for managing
the human resources department, assist district managers with labor issues,
conduct supervisor training and provide direction for complying with regulatory
agency requirements. Coordinate with legal counsel grievance and arbitration
issues, investigation and defense of unfair labor practice charges, and
participate in collective bargaining sessions. Manage the worker's compensation
and safety program.
1988-1989
KGM HARVESTING, Wheeling, W. Virginia. A lettuce harvesting company with
350 employees and operations in California and Arizona. Lettuce was produced
exclusively for the McDonald's restaurants. Labor Relations Manager, responsible
for managing human resources, field labor payroll, safety and worker's
compensation, coordinating compliance issues with county, state and federal
agency regulation requirements. Other major responsibilities were to administer
weekly field labor payroll by proper calculations of pay rates, overtime
pay, deductions, compliance with labor code regulations and resolving
pay check issues. Primary focus was employee relations and maintaining
a non-union work environment.
1989-1991
FARM EMPLOYERS LABOR SERVICE, Sacramento, CA. Labor Management Consultant.
Provided member clients with human resources management, labor relations
and safety training services in the Central Coast Region. Conducted periodic
workshops and training for managers, supervisors and employees. Assisted
member clients with labor issues such as ALRA/NLRA elections, unfair labor
practice charges, conflict resolution, communication between management
and field labor and providing guidance with labor and safety regulations
compliance. Primary focus of work was directed at maintaining positive
employee relations for clients.
1991-1993
CALIFORNIA COMPENSATION AND FIRE COMPANY, San Jose, CA. Loss Control
Consultant. Responsibilities were to advice management of risk and exposures
associated with new prospects from a loss control desirability. Assist
customers in identifying accident trends and develop recommendations and
controls. Present training programs and assist customers in complying
with regulatory agency requirements such as Cal/OSHA, DPR, CHP and DOT.
Conduct facility audits and investigate serious injuries for purposes
of subrogation and prevention. Interface and coordinate services with
other loss control consultants, insurance broker staff and customers.
1993-1997
BARLOCKER INSURANCE SERVICES, Salinas, CA. Loss Control Consultant. Primary
tasks were to assist customers with developing loss control strategies
and service plans to address accident trends, conduct management workshops
and seminars on safety and workers compensation topics. Provide employee
training on safety issues regarding injury prevention and compliance with
statutory requirements and assist with acquisition of new business and
coordinate loss control services with sales staff.
1997-1999
CALIFORNIA FLORAL COUNCIL, Gilroy, CA. Labor Management Consultant. Primary
responsibilities were to provide guidance and assistance to members with
human resources issues, conflict resolution, facilitate communication
between management and work force, conduct periodic job site visits with
member employees to foster positive labor relations and conduct management
training on ALRA/NLRA union organizing issues.
PAN AMERICAN UNDERWRITERS, Salinas, CA. Loss Control Consultant. Responsibilities
were to provide guidance and assistance in implementing loss control programs
for a variety of agricultural clients, conduct periodic facility hazard
audits, job site surveys and make recommendations for hazard control.
Present training programs and workshops for clients in workers compensation
cost control, injury prevention, supervisor training and CAL/OSHA compliance.
1999-Present
FARM EMPLOYERS LABOR SERVICE, Sacramento, CA. A subsidiary of the California
Farm Bureau Federation that provides labor management consulting services
for it's client's. Manager of Field Operations, responsible for overseeing
a group of six labor management consultants in California and Oregon.
Coordinating assignments for ALRA/NLRA election petitions, workshops and
seminars, working with legal counsel on investigation projects, providing
field support to Labor Management Consultants and resolving client issues.
