With the ever-changing and complexity of labor laws, supervisors are becoming increasingly more important in heading off penalties, fines and unionization. Besides the problems a company will incur for their violations, supervisors can also be held personally liable for them.

"What" will be presented:

The Farm Employers Labor Service (FELS) will be conducting six half-day seminars for Spanish speaking supervisors. The programs are designed to get them "Labor Law Compliant." Here is an overview of the areas that will be covered:

Safety and Health Violations: The California Labor Code provides that a supervisor having control or custody of any employment, who knowingly or negligently violates any Cal/OSHA standard or certain other provisions of law, is guilty of a serious violation. A violator can be assessed civil and criminal penalties punishable by imprisonment, or by a fine not to exceed $5,000, or both.

Harassment: Sexual harassment--and, for that matter, any type of unlawful harassment--by supervisors is a serious matter. In the past few years, at least three California agricultural employers have incurred massive penalties.

Discrimination: Discrimination–differential treatment–can take many forms. Some are legal while others are illegal. But even though an act may be legal, often it is unwise.

Discipline: Improper discipline at the very least can create poor employee moral and at the most can create legal liabilities. This program will review techniques to eliminate both moral and legal concerns.

Communications: Poor communications causes loss in production and effects employee moral. Learning listening and verbal skills is important for any supervisor.
